Liberté
In the middle of WWII, a family of travelers park their caravans in a wine-making region during grape-picking season. A young orphan who has followed them along the way, P'tit Claude, is taken in by Théodore, a veterinarian and local mayor. When a new law forbids the nomads from moving on, the local school teacher takes on the task of educating the children of the camp. Helped by Théodore, she tries to keep her new friends from being deported to a completely different, horrifying camp. Two years after Transylvania, Tony Gatlif applies his usual poetry and lyricism to take on the difficult and relatively unknown subject of the effect of the holocaust on the Roma population. Inspired by a group of resistance fighters called "les Justes" who were honored by Israel in 1953, Liberté is an homage to the half-million travelers murdered by the Nazis.
