I Love You Philip Morris

From the day the people he had always believed were his true parents informed him he had been adopted, Steven Russell has put all his energy into being the "best": the most righteous by becoming a cop, the most sanctimonious by playing the organ in church, the most conventional by marrying the perfect woman who's born him two adorable children. In the nice and proper life he has built for himself, Steven has had no choice but to keep his homosexuality a secret. Until the day he survives a very serious car accident, and decides to stop lying - to his relatives and to himself. Embracing a flamboyantly gay lifestyle, he dumps his family and moves to Miami. But he soon comes to realise his new life requires more funds than expected. His solution: becoming a crook. Caught, tried and jailed, he meets Philip Morris, his soul mate, in prison. Stopping at nothing to stay close to his adored lover, Steven nevertheless struggles to keep up the relationship: cell changes, rarely simultaneous discharges and new jail terms interfere with their love, challenging his twisted creativity. Supposedly inspired by a true story and produced by Luc Besson, this dramatic comedy with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor almost didn't get released. Possibly because its style is disconcertingly hybrid - a pastel love story stylistically reminiscent of 1950's American melodrama, but between two male criminals - rather than its content scandalous.
