Fish Tank
Between the other girls' aggressiveness, her dangerous encounters with pikey boys and her single mother's violent behaviour towards her and her little sister, Mia, a rebellious 15-year-old, wanders aimlessly around her East London council estate. Her only hobby: getting drunk on cheap cider while devising choreographies on hip-hop songs in one of her block's abandoned flats. When her mother finally meets someone stable, Mia struggles to accept his nice behaviour towards her, even though it appears to be motivated solely by his paternal instinct. After winning an Oscar for her short film "Wasp" and completing a breathtaking first feature film, "Red Road", director Andrea Arnold proves she fully deserves to be part of the star system of British social realism, beside Mike Leigh and Ken Loach, with this poignant drama showing the nuances and contradictions of endearing characters without an ounce of arrogance or judgment.
