Die Päpstin
Legend claims a woman was voted pope in the 9th century. In 814, Charlemagne dies and a girl named Johanna is born in Ingelsheim. Against the wishes of her father, the intelligent girl gets an education, hiding in a Benedictine monastery disguised as a man. There she has a successful career, making it all the way to Rome, where she becomes the Pope's closest advisor. German director Sönke Wortmann's movie adaptation is a stuffy historical drama, which often degenerates into a parody of the genre. Although it raises the issue of equality within the church, the movie's crude staging is annoying.
