Bassidji

Born in Tehran in 1972 and resident of France since 1984, Mehran Tamadon is an Iranian intellectual, an atheist, the son of communists, who lives unmarried with his girlfriend. For this gripping documentary, Tamadon returns to his birth country and spends almost 3 years interviewing a group of Basij, a volunteer paramilitary group founded by Ayatollah Khomenei in 1979 and revived as an extremist militia enforcing hijab (the women's traditional head covering) under the command of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Tamadon tries to understand the motivation and ideology pushing the young men to join.
